The Soap Factory Graphic Design Residency
About The Soap factory
The Soap Factory is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting artists and engaging audiences in a unique and historic environment. Their programs are artist-centered yet accessible, and offer a visceral experience of art and the life of the artist.
Three By Five
From May to September of 2016 The Soap Factory presented a series of exhibitions: Three-by-Five. Five month long residencies lead by three artist coordinators selected from Soap Factory alumni or other highly-regarded artist leads. The artist coordinators hosted one or more emerging artists of their own choosing in one of our first floor galleries.
After each opening event, selected critics reviewed the work and it was released in a series of books for visitors to purchase.
Design during july
During the month of July, witnesses released live video of unjust police shootings of black victims. It started on July 5th when Alton Sterling in Louisiana was shot by two officers at close range. The following day, Philando Castile in Minnesota was shot during a traffic stop and the aftermath was live streamed to Facebook. On July 7th, Dallas police officers were attacked during a protest, killing five officers and injuring nine others.
Artists within the residency reacted to the events and surrounding environment. I wanted to inform readers about the exhibited work while also being empathetic to recent events.
